Executive public speaking training is coaching in how a senior leader speaks when the stakes are high. Its core focus areas cover mindset, message, delivery and pressure.
- Executive Mindset
- Treating a talk as a decision you lead, not a report you read.
- Top-Down Messaging
- Presenting the main point first rather than saving the conclusion for the end.
- Delivery & Control
- Pace, pauses and gestures you choose rather than ones nerves choose for you.
- Storytelling & Persuasion
- Turning numbers into a short story with a problem, a choice and a change.
- Impromptu Speaking & Q&A
- Answering on the spot in a clear shape: answer, reason, example.
- Authority Transfer
- Letting the authority of your role show in how you speak: direct, steady, unhurried.
- Message Structure & Storytelling
- Executive courses teach you to fit the message to the occasion's purpose and the audience's interests, using audience analysis, per AmberWillo's overview of executive courses.
- High-Pressure Q&A
- Hostile questions, met with a pause and a short answer.
- Vocal & Physical Delivery
- Voice, posture and stillness that read as calm.
- Virtual & Boardroom Adaptation
- Adjusting the same message for a camera, a long table or a stage.
Beyond Basics
Executive training differs from general training in its stakes, not its basics. O*NET lists Speaking, "talking to others to convey information effectively", among the skills of Chief Executives, with "Communicating with People Outside the Organization" as a work activity. Fear has a cost too: a 2019 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Psychology links fear of public speaking to negative occupational consequences and finds psychological interventions reduce it. In a NACE survey, more than two-thirds of employers said they seek verbal communication skills.
If the basics still wobble, start with public speaking skills training. On format, AmberWillo's executive training guide notes that live online sessions give real-time interaction and feedback, while self-paced courses give control over speed and schedule.
Prepare for hard questions
Preparing for hard questions means rehearsing short answers out loud before the room asks. Quick public speaking tips help on the day; the drill builds the habit.
- List the five questions you least want to hear.
- Answer each out loud in one sentence, then add one reason.
- Record them and cut every hedge.
- Before the meeting, say "I am excited" out loud. A study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General found people who reappraised anxiety as excitement felt more excited and performed better than those who tried to calm down.
Confidently, the solo rehearsal
The private rehearsal room: run your first thirty seconds before the board meeting, alone, and see what the room will see. The app serves up two surprise words for an off-the-cuff answer, grades voice and face out of ten, counts each um and points to one fix, then keeps you sharp with daily games.
